Mesothelioma is a nasty cancer

Heather contacted me and let me know that September 26th is Mesothelioma awareness day.  She asked if I might be able to spread the news.  Being a lucky cancer survivor myself I jumped on board.  My father died of lung cancer three years ago.  It was extremely painful for him.  I have to admit that I don't know that much about the mesothelioma but I have started to read more about it as I am sure that you all will to after this awareness day.

Heather Von St. James was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma at the age of 36, just weeks after giving birth to her daughter. Today, over eight years after undergoing surgery and subsequent chemotherapy treatment, Heather proudly claims the title of mesothelioma cancer survivor. Heather gratefully and passionately embraces each new day of life and lives to spread her message of hope and inspiration to all those affected by mesothelioma. Heather knows firsthand what it is like to be diagnosed with this disease as well as the issues, questions and concerns faced by patients and families alike. She is honored to be able to share her story and would be happy to speak with you about it.

ADVENTURES OF AN ARTIST IN UTAH

Okay that is me, in the back.  This is all new to me.  Its not to say that I have never ridden on a Quad but I have never driven one.  The other beautiful lady is my friend Susan.  When I found out I was going to live in Utah.  I was grief stricken over leaving my friends in Phoenix, but who do I meet my first months there but Susan and her wonderful husband Chad.  We had a great time today out near the Salt Lake.  We went out shooting.  The ladies, myself included, shot our pistols and the men their hunting rifles.  Susan and I decided to go out for a ride, it was so much fun.  Tomorrow a ride on our horses.  I will bring my camera.  If you follow my other blogs, you will see a new life in my paintings that I am attributing to a great many things including my new life in Utah.

Amazingly Cute Fine Art Chair

Mixed media chair art.  I have been considering of late whether to use the words cute or happy when describing my work.  It is of course, cute and happy art and is meant to be.  When in the process of selling my art at certain venues I often wonder whether I may lose  a sale or two because my work may not be taken seriously as fine art.  It is fine art but I have decided that I do not want it to be taken seriously because it is intended to cheer those who need cheering.  It is meant to reside in the homes of those who have made the conscious decision to surround themselves with art that makes them smile.  So I have decided with out two much pondering that, no, my work was not meant to be taken seriously but meant instead to be taken in with a smile and then again to be shared as such.

I haven't written since it was snowing.  Well when the sun came out so did I.  I went to the tulip festival here in Utah.  Talk about color, oh my goodness.  I just loved it.  I have so many new florals to paint now.  I am so excited.  I also started a vegetable garden, I never thought I would love it so much.  I will post a few photo's later.

I Started A Garden

I started a garden.  I had been pre-warned that this may happen.  I guess we can get snow here until May.  It is not to bad though.   We have a gorgeous day at about 75 degrees and the next day it snows.  It is actually kind of fun as long as it doesn't stay cold.  I am still a desert dweller at heart.  The landscape is beautiful here, I am trying all kinds of different techniques in my painting.  As soon as I perfect one or at least make them presentable I will post them.

Fun In PARK CITY

We spent a day in Park City.  I actually was on the shopping end of art.  I bought two pieces, I will photograph them later and let you all see them.  The gallery I bought them at was amazing also.  Stay tuned for all of the details.kl

Pen and Ink sketch of a very interesting saguaro.  I like to draw the saguaros with a lot of character.  This one looks as though it has been home to a number of birds.  I have started a painting of this sketch.  I will post it as soon as I have finished it.

Life Changes

Saying good bye to my father was hard and a huge life change for our family.  My father was a civil engineer and was instrumental in designing many of the roads that we drive on daily here in Arizona.  He also was an artist in his own right.  My dad built bird houses, but not just any bird houses.  He built a replica of the farm house he was born and raised in.  I am lucky enough to have it now.  It is just beautiful and I will cherish it always.  I will paint a bird house portrait of it soon.

Saying Goodbye

This is a photo of my father, Mark and his wife Barbara.  Dad and Barbara never missed one of my shows.  They purchased this painting from me at my second year of Celebration of Fine Art.  Dad has been one of my biggest fans.  He passed away on Aug. 18th after a year long battle with Lung cancer.  I will miss him very much.

Keeping Up

     I haven't posted for quite awhile.  Oct. of 2010 was the start of a truly challenging time in my life as well as my family's.  The events we all had to face have been life changing for us.  The last of them ending in a move.  We will be moving to Utah sometime in September.  Our five kids have lived in Phoenix for their entire lives.  This will be very exciting for them.  We are moving our mini farm with us.  The horses, dogs and rabbit, will be with us.  Still deciding on the chickens and ducks, don't know if they will be up to the move.  We will miss our family and friends greatly but with social media it will always seem as if they are close.  I will return to Scottsdale each year for the Celebration of Fine Art for as long as they will have me.  They are some of the greatest people I know and I consider myself lucky for the last six years I have been included in this show.  Hopefully we will be all settled by the time I head back for the show. 

Plein Air Painting At Christopher Creek, AZ

This little painting measures 10 x 8 inches.  I set up while the family was hiking and started to paint.  I had a great time.  The rain was coming off and on but I was set up under an awning.  It was very green and beautiful there.  The creek was only twenty feet away, heaven.  This painting is for sale for $200.   All inquiries please contact me at dfbarbee@cox.net.

SETTING UP FOR THE EDWARDS SHOW IN COLORADO

We had quite an adventure.  My daughter, Bridgett and I drove to Colorado, set up our first official outside weekend show.  We met the most exceptional people from the artist to the people who hosted the event.  All of the people we met were so friendly and helpful.  I have to tell you if you do not visit these out door fine art shows you can really miss out on meeting and making the most incredible friends.  I really would like to do more of these shows if only to keep in contact with some of these artist.  I am going to chase down some of their websites and include them in my blogs so that you will have the opportunity to get to know them also. 

I just want to say to all of you art lovers out there, please continue to support your favorite artists even in the smallest way if that is all you are able to do right now because the people I have been meeting this summer need to keep on doing what they do.  All of our hard times will pass eventually and it would be a shame if we were missing some of our more talented people when they do.

Great day for a sweater.  It was a bit breezy and chilly.  I am going to do three shows in Colorado this summer.  We are going to make it a family vacation.  Of course I am going to work weekends but it never feels like work to me.  I love getting to meet everyone.  I am working hard to get all new fresh work.  I am painting a lot of chairs  and florals.  A few aspen, birch and pine forrests also.  Check out my daily blog, http://www.barbeeartdaily.com/ to see the new work as it is finished.
